Shankar Jaikishan were the biggest names among Bollywood music directors for nearly two decades from 1950s to 1960s. It was in 1970 that Jaikishan died. Meanwhile “Mera Naam Joker” flopped big time. All these facts meant that Shankar Jaikishan musical duo was disbanded and moreover Raj Kapoor dropped Shankar Jaikishan ( then effectively only Shankar) [...]

I have just realised that when it comes to love songs in Bollywood, the lyrics do not believe in making small talk, rather they make big talk. The lover would not say such small things like “I love you”, rather he would talk on a much larger scale like how his love is forever, how [...]

“Basant Bahar” is a movie that was based on the subject of music itself, like “Baiju Baawra” before it. As can be expected, such movies were full of songs. And all these songs have easily become immortal. There are so many such songs in each of these movies hat one is just amazed. And one [...]

“Mera Naam Joker” was a labour of love for Raj Kapoor and he had made this movie with great hopes and expectations. Here is a song sung by a singer who is hardly known today. The singer is called Subir Sen and here he sings for a forgotten movie called “Kathputli” (1958). Lyricist is Shailendra and music direction is by Shankar Jaikishan.

I have read a lot about this song called “Hum matwaale naujawaan”. I was not much aware of this song. In fact, there is another song with similar lyrics sung by Rafi and Mukesh from a 1961 movie which itself is called “Hum matwaale naujawan”. But this song “hum matwaale naujawaan” is from an earlier [...]

It is an incredibly romantic and sensuous song. And all this effect is created thanks to the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. And the lyrics by Shailendra are incredibly imaginative.Shankar Jaikishan’s music is awesome of course.

Here is a duet from “Sangam” picturised on Raj Kapoor and Vyjyanti Mala. The people involved in creating this song are the usual suspects, viz Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh and Lata. This song is a party song, and this movie seemed to have quite a few party songs, I do not know why.

I know that a song sung by two singers ( typically one male and one female singer) is called a duet or “dogaana”, but what about a song sung by three singers ? Anyone has any idea ? Is it called a “tigaana” or a “triet” ?
